  • The tattoos Eritreans get before they leave for Europe by BBC

When photographer Ricci Shryock met up with a group of Eritrean migrants in Milan, she noticed they had one thing in common – most had tattoos. They have asked to remain anonymous because most have fled compulsory military service to go to Italy.

Human rights groups say this can last indefinitely. He left his mother, who the tattoo is about, in the capital, Asmara. The UN says conscripts are subjected to “slavery-like practices”, such as hard labour, with poor food and wretched pay. Eritrea says this is not true.Tattoo on backImage copyrightRicci Shryock22 year old said: “I got the angel Michael to protect me”. Like most of these men he travelled overland from Eritrea to Libya, then by boat across the Mediterranean to Italy. Thousands of people have died undertaking this journey – either in the desert, or when their overcrowded boats capsize.

  • ‘No Ethiopians wanted’ job ad sparks outrage

Minister says ‘appalling’ racism must end; manpower company behind notice: ‘It was supposed to stay inside the company’

Justice Ministry officials expressed outrage on Wednesday over a recruitment ad that stated that Israelis of Ethiopian descent were not wanted. The ad, published by the LM manpower company, called for warehouse workers to fold clothes at a Caesarea-based fashion company, Walla reported. The ad noted that the job was 7 a.m.-5 p.m. and paid minimum wage (NIS 25 an hour, or $6.50), and specified that the employer “does not want Ethiopians.”

Justice Ministry Director Emi Palmor said that, if true, the ad was “a blatant case of discrimination and racism.” Palmor, who also heads a ministerial committee seeking to uproot racism against Ethiopian Israelis, noted that testimony submitted to the committee indicated “this is not the first case, and certainly not the only case.”

Palmor said the case would be investigated by the commissioner for equal employment opportunities in the Economy Ministry.

The fashion company, Expose, said in response that it had nothing to do with the offensive caveat, and that the ad was published without its knowledge. “This wasn’t published by us and certainly isn’t acceptable according to our values,” a spokeswoman said. “This doesn’t reflect our opinions at all.”

The manpower company said the ad was a result of “human error” and that it was removed “the moment we found out.” Notably, the company did not deny the actual request by the client.

“This was not for publication. It was somehow leaked out. It was supposed to stay inside the company and be dealt with inside the company,” a statement by LM said. “This is not something we promote. Apparently it was a human error. We don’t support racist statements. We believe in recruitment for all ethnic groups and communities.”

The ad was blasted by Israeli officials.

Social Equality Minister Gila Gamliel called it “appalling” and said she would bring the matter before the cabinet on Thursday.

“Racism and discrimination cut through sectors and groups in Israeli society. We must put an end to it once and for all,” she said.

MK Omer Barlev of the Zionist Union said it was “unacceptable for people of the Ethiopian community to be a punching bag for lowly racists. Not in the State of Israel and not on our watch.” He vowed to promote legislation to prevent such incidents from recurring.

MK Karin Elharar (Yesh Atid) said it was “shameful… we mustn’t allow this to be a part of society,” while Michal Biran (Zionist Union) said it was shocking to find such displays of racism in present-day Israel.

In July Palmor submitted a major report to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on ways to combat racism against Israelis of Ethiopian heritage.

The report was produced by the committee chaired by Palmor, which was established in response to recent public street protests by Ethiopian Israeli activists against what they said was the rampant prejudice they face in Israeli society.

The issue rose to the fore last year amid accusations by Ethiopian Israelis of rampant police brutality and abuse against members of the community. The community staged a series of demonstrations across the country, triggered by video footage showing a seemingly unprovoked police assault on an Ethiopian-Israeli soldier in April 2015.

Thousands took to the streets demanding the government address the alleged systematic and institutionalized racism faced by the Ethiopian Israeli community. Activists also expressed their frustration with what they said was the state’s shortcomings in addressing the social and economic needs of their community.

The latest report marks the conclusion of months of deliberations that resulted from last year’s tensions. It offers 53 detailed recommendations for tackling racism throughout Israeli society, mainly through the education system.

Upon receiving the report Netanyahu promised to take “further steps” in the wake of the report. Racism, he said, “is unbecoming of our country, our citizens and our nation.”

  • Myths and truths about pregnancy prevention

    To take better care
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 33% of pregnancies in the country are unwanted. If you are looking out for you to avoid pregnancy, knows the truth behind some common myths about contraception and pregnancy prevention, and protect yourself better.

    1. I can not get pregnant on my period
“During menstruation, pregnancy risk is reduced, but not eliminated,” says Dr. Larissa Hirsch, the Nemours organization. “This may be because sometimes ovulation occurs before the end of the bleeding or because some sperm survive in the vagina until it happens.” Always protected. According to Dr. Hirsch, “if you’re taking care to avoid pregnancy, it is important to always practice safe sex: only through proper use of contraceptives could prevent embrazo with seguiridad”.

    2. Breastfeeding prevents pregnancy
“Breastfeeding inhibits ovulation, but this effect would last only a few months. Once the body regains its hormonal balance, the woman returns to be fertile, so you can get pregnant even if you are still breastfeeding,” explains Dr. Robert Zurawin, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Do not take chances
Dr. Zurawin recommends that “if you just had a baby and you are breastfeeding, you should use contraception as you begin to have sex again. Ideally, use barriers such as condoms or diaphragm, but there are pills that would be safe during breastfeeding but before you take them, see your doctor. “

    3. Am I protected if it is my first time?
“Even from the first time, you can get pregnant,” says Dr. Andrea S. Fernandez, Wake Forest University. “The first time you may experience some pain and some bleeding, but that has nothing to do with fertility. If you wish to avoid pregnancy, you should always protect you.”

    4. Contraception is infallible
“The only surefire way to prevent pregnancy is abstinence, for all contraceptive methods have some risk margin, but used correctly will provide protection to more than 90%,” says Dr. Hirsch. What is best for you?
Before choosing a contraceptive method, Dr. Hirsch recommends that “need to know how effective each method has to prevent pregnancy, and especially the proper way to use it as misuse reduce its effectiveness. It is also important to know whether this method protects you from STIs. “

    5. Two is better than one
“Many believe that using a condom too tight or two condoms would provide greater protection,” said Dr. Brunilda Nazario, the Endocrine Society. “But this would only increase the friction promoting condom breakage and raising the risk of pregnancy and genital lesions”.

    6. The pill is effective immediately
“It all depends on when to take: if you start treatment within the first five days of the start of your period, you’ll be protected immediately However, if you start taking it at another time, you will have to wait a month to be protected.” said Dr. Steven Goldstein, the Universad New York. Take precautions
Dr. Goldstein warns that “if you started treatment with birth control pills in a different period from the beginning of your time, you should use jointly non-hormonal contraceptive method (such as condoms) until you complete a full cycle of pills.”

    7. All protect against STDs?
According to Dr. Fernandez, “only condoms can protect against sexually transmitted diseases, and prevent pregnancy. If you have multiple sexual partners, the ideal is to use this method and make you occasionally examined to know the state of your health “.

    8. The pill fattening?
“Weight gain is a side effect that affects few women,” says Dr. Fernandez. “In general, it may be because the hormones increase appetite and would promote fluid retention, but even in that case, the increase would be about two pounds (one kilogram).”

    9. You can become infertile
According to Dr. Fernandez, “hormonal contraceptives do not affect long-term fertility.. Most women ovulate normally again one month after leaving the pills In other cases, ovulation could take up to six months, but Under no circumstances is lost or reduced fertility. “

    10. The condom can be replaced
The Cleveland Clinic reports that some people use balloons or food casings instead of condoms. However, warns the institution, these materials would not meet either the penis or could easily break during sex, raising the risk of pregnancy and genital injuries.

  • EU, US authorities press charges against intruders into Ethiopian Embassies

October 1, 2016 (ADDIS ABABA) - Countries hosting Ethiopian embassies have begun filing charges against Ethiopians who trespass the vicinities of the embassies in those countries.

Ethiopian protesters in U.S. and Europe have repeatedly stormed embassies in those countries.

Previously angered protesters have also briefly took control of Ethiopian embassy in London.

Extensive and deadly violence has been taking place during anti-government protests in Ethiopia’s Amhara and Oromiya region.

Tewolde Mulugeta, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told journalists that the ethiopian government is working closely with US and European countries to bring perpetrators to justice.

Government officials allege that the protests in Ethiopia and elsewhere are being organised by exiled opposition movement such as the US based Ginbot-7 which had long been designated by Addis Ababa as terrorist entity.

The Ethnic Oromo and Amhara demonstrators however say they are protesting because the government has failed to respect their political and economic rights.

Tewolde said the western countries are filing charges against the perpetrators in accordance with the Vienna Declaration that provides the premises of a diplomatic mission, such as an embassy, to be protected by the host country from intrusion or damage.

The Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961 is an international treaty that defines a framework for diplomatic relations between independent countries.

The Convention provides that the premises of a diplomatic mission are inviolable and the host country must protect the mission from intrusion or damage.

Contrary to the provisions of the Convention that provides for the invincibility of embassies and missions, Ethiopians in the Diaspora intruded into the compounds and created havoc on the compounds of the Ethiopian embassies in London, Stockholm, Washington and Canberra.

"Some Diasporas violated international law of immunity of the Ethiopian embassies abroad by intruding into the embassies compounds when they have every democratic rights to present their issues to the embassies in a formal legal manner," Tewolde stated.

According to the spokesperson, the Australian government has already filed a charge against intruders into the Embassy in Canberra, while the respective governments in London, Stockholm and Washington are processing legal actions against perpetrators.

The official further said the doors of the Ethiopian government are always open to engage in dialogue with Ethiopians in the Diaspora on the policies and the development strategies of the government based on visible evidences.

According to Human Rights Watch (HRW) Ethiopian security forces crackdown against protesters has led to the life loss of hundreds of citizens.

Right groups accuse the Ethiopia security forces of using excessive force to suppress the wave of protests.

Oromo opposition political parties told sudan Tribune that Dozens of their members including leaders remain jailed.

Some of the opposition officials were accused of having links with terrorist organisation who wish to destabilize the horn of Africa’s nation.

Ethiopia has also accused arc-rival Eritrea of backing the havoc by financing and hosting anti-peace elements, an allegation Asmara denies.

  • Is sex necessary for a happy marriage?

    • As a marriage counselor, I see a lot of couples who come to me with sexual problems in their relationship. The stories that couples tell me about their sexual difficulties vary, but most of them go something like this: He wants more sex and she doesn’t. He says he needs sex to feel close and she doesn’t see why her snuggling, cuddling and stuff she does around the house doesn’t do it for him. She says she needs to feel close first to have sex and he doesn’t see why sex doesn’t help her to feel close.

At the end of the day, she doesn’t see why sex is so important to him, anyway. There are so many other things they do together as a couple that makes their relationship great that sex shouldn’t be as much of a priority. But after a while, she begins to wonder if there’s something wrong with her for not wanting sex and he also begins to wonder if something’s wrong with him for wanting sex as much as he does. So the couple goes on like this, both wondering if something is wrong with them or the other one, and they grow more and more frustrated and distant. So it’s no wonder that many couples, and women especially, wonder if sex really is necessary for a happy marriage because it seems to just cause more problems. If he could just learn to do without, the problem would be solved. (You can read another great article with 6 tips for talking to your husband about sex.)

    • Sex is vitally important in marriage

The only thing you uniquely share with your spouse that you don’t share with anyone else is sex. So sex is the only thing that sets you and your spouse apart from simply being roommates. It’s a vital part of marriage.

Not only does sex set you and your spouse apart from simply being roommates, it also requires a deeper level of communication that you don’t normally do with just anyone. Sex requires you to talk to each other about intimate, emotional things. For example, to have a truly intimate experience with your spouse, you need to tell your spouse where you like to be touched, and make requests for certain things. This requires that you both feel a comfort level with each other that you’ve never felt with anyone else before. It requires you to both become very vulnerable by asking, receiving and giving sexually. And it requires you to reach a deeper level of trust that your spouse will respond to your requests without judgment.

    • Sex also creates passion and a unique connection

To be able to talk to your spouse in this kind of vulnerable, intimate way creates a unique connection that you simply can’t have with anyone else without becoming sexual. This kind of intimate talk and physical touch creates passion in your relationship, too. It tells your spouse you think of him or her as more than just a friend. You think of your relationship as something deeper. This unique connection that lovers have creates vibrance, passion and romance between the two of you that you can’t create in any way other than sexually.

When couples come to me for counseling about their sexual difficulties, they’re sometimes surprised that I don’t focus on technique or the number of times that they engage in sex in a week. Whether they have sex two times a week or 10 times a week is irrelevant. What’s more important is that sex becomes an intimate and connecting experience for both of them. If this isn’t happening, then the marriage isn’t really happy. So instead of couples arguing about sex and creating more distance, couples need to learn to really talk and communicate about sex. They also need to be open to hearing what their spouse wants, feels and needs. This is not only a recipe for great sex but a great marriage as well.
